Otsitsakáion Cosplay
When I created the machinima She Falls for Ages, a sci-fi retelling of the Haudenosaunee creation story, it was both a challenge and a thrill to imagine Skyworld, the location considered by the Haudenosaunee to be where the human race originated.
I envisioned Skyworld as a faraway planet, populated by a just and happy population. Because I wished to depict a place where skin colour did not and could not matter, I gave the people jewel-toned skin colours. I chose fuchsia for the main character, Otsitsakáion, because it is both powerful and feminine. White clothing with peek-a-boo cut-outs showed off their beautiful skin.
When her people learn that their world is dying, Otsitsakáion volunteers to travel through the unknown in the hopes of finding a new world. A ceremony is created to mark the event, and Otsitsakáion dons new regalia for the occasion. I loved the outfit that was created for this moment in the movie. I loved it so much that I wanted to wear it myself! And I did.
Otsitsakáion Cosplay Costume responds to my desire to see characters from our stories out in the world, while also documenting my interrogation of transmediation between the virtual and the physical.
